About

The ”Englishman” ("Englezu") House, a historic building located near the central area of Craiova, on Calea Unirii, at no. 80, was built in the 19th century. The building is located on the right side of the street, in the direction of the traffic (descending from Mântuleasa Church to Nicolae Romanescu Park), just before the summer garden of the Patria Cinema. As well as a large number of houses in the center of Craiova (the Eskenazy and Zwillinger houses on Calea Unirii, the Eskenazy House on Ştirbei Vodă Street, the Dr. Mendel House on Simion Bărnuţiu Street), the "Englezu" House too belongs to the civic patrimony built by the influent Jewish community that flourished in Craiova in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
A known fact regarding the ”Englezu” House is that is used to belong to the Dunkelblum family, who owned in the interwar period the "La Englez" store, located on Unirii Street, at no. 70.
