Dianu House, given back to the tourist circuit. See here images from the works!

What, until a few years ago, seemed just one of the long-forgotten heritage houses, has become, today, a jewel polished and returned to the tourist and cultural circuit. Dianu House, a work of art of architecture of the beginning of the last century is, today, a living testimony of the fact that, where there is involvement and desire, great things can be achieved.

By accessing European funds by the Dolj County Council and by handing it over to the "Alexandru and Aristia Aman" County Library, Casa Dianu will become the Museum of the Romanian Book and Exile, a unique museum in Romania, which will bring together works by Romanian authors in exile, such as Mircea Eliade, Basarab Nicolescu, Vintilă Horia, Andrei Șerban, Leonid Mămăligă, Cicerone Poghirc or the archives of the Cenacle of Neuilly. Also, the museum will have the works of acad. Dan Berindei, acad. Dinu C. Giurescu and acad. Ștefan Ștefănescu or Ileana and Romulus Vulpescu.

Discover Dolj has always kept you up to date with what happened to Dianu House, throughout the implementation of the project. We present to you today photos from the works, which were taken with total dedication and involvement from the builders.

"The work was not easy at all. They involved a lot of painstaking work and I can say that the original architectural details have been preserved, including the gold leaf, and 97 percent of the carpentry elements have been restored and refurbished. The whole ensemble faithfully reflects the way the building was built, at the beginning of the last century, and you will see that, on the facade of the building, the initials of the owner Tache Dianu are still preserved. We set out to return the building to the community exactly as the great boyar of Bănie designed and built it. I am glad that we can offer the people of Craiova and the country, in short, an extraordinary objective, a real architectural monument", explained the president of the Dolj County Council, Cosmin Vasile.

The restoration works of Casa Dianu cost about 5 million euros, money coming from European funds.

The old Dianu building, from 24 Ianuarie Street, is a monument dating from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, being a significant architectural and stylistic landmark for the architecture of Craiova. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century correspond to the period in which the city of Craiova underwent profound urban transformations: systematization of the street network, arrangement and modernization of important public gardens, construction and consolidation of public and private buildings, testimonies attesting the atmosphere and creative effervescence of the 1900s.

The spirit of the time required people to socialize, meeting at dance reunions and all sorts of cultural events in the life of the city, hosted in turn by famous and prestigious families. Hence the need for elites to have a residence in tune with the era in which an eclectic architectural style is preferred, a true amalgam of styles: late baroque, neoclassicism, neo-Romanian, French school academism, neo-renaissance etc.
