The Museum of the Romanian Book and Exile, 2 years of excellence in promoting national culture in exile
The Museum of the Romanian Book and Exile, which, over 10 years ago, was just a dream, recently celebrated 2 years of existence in the local and national cultural landscape. Through the collections it holds and the niche in which it was placed, the Museum of the Romanian Book and Exile is unique in the world and brings together over 40 personal collections of Romanian artists who created in exile.
In the sumptuous Dianu House, a heritage building from the late 19th century - early 20th century, restored with European funds by the Dolj County Council, there are, together, 40 collections of great personalities of Romanian culture, of which we mention only a few: Basarab Nicolescu (who, together with the former director of the "Alexandru and Aristia Aman" County Library, Lucian Dindirică, founded this museum), Emil Cioran, Mircea Eliade, Andrei Șerban, Ileana and Romulus Vulpescu, Vintilă Horia, Dinu C. Giurescu or George Banu.
A living institution, close to the public
The inauguration of this museum and its opening to the public meant justice done to the national culture, by offering visitors the possibility of finding out and studying documents, books or objects that belonged to these personalities. Thus, the value that the great people of culture brought to the national heritage could be known even more. The participation and integration of the Museum of the Romanian Book and Exile in national events, such as the European Night of Museums, or local events, such as Craiova Days, the „Shakespeare” International Festival, InstaCraiova, Oltenia Day and many others, has transformed the institution into a versatile, open and friendly space, offering the public the chance to admire both the special architecture of the Dianu House and its rich book collection, in a unique exhibition setting.
There is always something happening at the Museum of the Romanian Book and Exile, outside of the usual visits made to learn its story. Whether we are talking about fine art or photography exhibitions, workshops, reading clubs, film screenings, debates, lectures, official dinners or book launches, the institution is a living one, which fulfills its role of educating, growing and inspiring very well.
The visiting schedule is from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:00 and 17:00, and on the museum's website there is, very well documented and exhibited, its entire story, including a very interesting virtual tour.
We invite you to be part of the story that has been written for two years in the heart of Craiova, a story that has managed to reach the souls of many, overcoming borders and ensuring a good and warm place for free cultural expression, here, at home!
