#TheShakespeareWay. Craiova becomes the capital of the world theater between 19th and 29th of May
After an online and pandemic 2020 edition, now it's time to see each other again at the festival that brings, once in every two years, famous theater troupes and directors to Craiova. We’re talking about the International Shakespeare Festival, which will take place in Craiova, between May 19 and 29, and which promises extraordinary plays meant to bring in the minds and souls of theater lovers (and not only) the great William Shakespeare.
Organized by the National Theater "Marin Sorescu" and the Shakespeare Foundation, this year's edition, number XIII, includes theater performances by great international directors - Robert Lepage, Oskaras Koršunovas, Silviu Purcărete, the long-awaited production „The Tiger Lillies perform Hamlet” but also the premiere of the show „Richard III” directed by László Bocsárdi with Sorin Leoveanu in the main role, a production of the Shakespeare Festival and the Craiova National Theatre.
Over 100 events: theater performances, performances, multimedia installations, VR theater performances, concerts, outdoor film screenings, book launches, conferences and debates will take place in 13 locations in Craiova, in one event of great artistic attire that addresses both the finest connoisseurs of international theater and also the general public.
"What does the Shakespeare Festival in Craiova mean? A miracle. Born of love, saved from passion and - now, here - fulfilled by continuity. Only today, when so many events everywhere have disappeared or lost their sap, we understand that Emil Boroghină's dream lasts, is reborn, it is the moment of a new beginning. And we all have a chance to be a part of it. What a beautiful gift! What a celebration of the spirit! What a gesture to appreciate the values of world theater: from Wilson to Dodin, from Lepage to Ostermeier, from Declan Donnellan to Silviu Purcărete! Few, very few festivals anywhere have brought together such a gallery of personalities. Even fewer are trying to add more and more of new generations. It is the vocation of those who, every two years, transform Craiova into a Shakespearean island. Their victory then becomes a triumph of the Romanian theater on the great stage of the world ”- Octavian Saiu, theater critic, essayist and university professor.
