Traditional crafts, in the spotlight, at the 46th edition of the Craiova Folk Craftsmen's Fair!

The 46th edition of the Folk Craftsmen's Fair, organized annually in Craiova every autumn, takes place this weekend, to the delight of lovers of folk crafts. Thus, between October 24 and 26, on the esplanade of the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater, over 50 artisans from the main ethnographic areas of Romania will come to our city, at the invitation of the organizers, the Oltenia Museum.

The official opening of the event takes place on Friday, October 24, at 12:00, in the "William Shakespeare" Square, with the award ceremony to take place on Saturday, October 25, at 12:00, with the craftsmen being present at the fair until Sunday, October 26, inclusive, with the daily visiting schedule between 9:00 and 22:00.

As every year, the craftsmen arrive in Craiova in all their variety: ceramists, bone and wood sculptors, weavers, icon makers on wood and glass, weavers in wool and goat hair, cotton, silk, but also glassmakers, creators of traditional costumes and interior fabrics, beekeepers, producers of traditional delicacies, including homemade sweets or the famous Sibiu cheeses and smoked meats, for the most longing of visitors. The fruits of autumn will thus be celebrated here, at home, especially since on Sunday, October 26, we will celebrate the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius, the spiritual protector of Craiova.

Visitors will also be able to come into direct contact with the art of craftsmanship, as the event will also feature interactive workshops, where the public will be able to see how certain objects are made and will be able to interact directly with the invited craftsmen. The working techniques imprinted in the folk art objects are found on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - U.N.E.S.C.O., including pottery, weaving, the art of the shirt with a top etc.

We advise you to participate in the fair and get to know, closely, these people with golden hands who manage to keep alive, through the objects they make, our beautiful values and traditions. Only with their help, but also with the help of the young people who we hope will follow their example and dedication, will we be able to truly understand and appreciate these immortal folk arts.

The Folk Crafts Fair is organized by the Oltenia Museum Craiova – Ethnography Section, with the support of the Dolj County Council and in partnership with the City Hall and the Local Municipal Council of Craiova, the Dolj County Center for Culture and Art – the “Maria Tănase” Folk Dance Ensemble and the “Colibri” Children and Youth Theater Craiova – the “Maria Tănase” Folklore Section.
